Movie Manic
Due largely to the combination of a gift subscription to Netflix, having OnDemand cable, and having a piratical boyfriend, I have watched an inordinate number of movies in the past two months. I would estimate that 90% of those movies have been enjoyable, with the occasional fluke thrown in (most of the flukes coming from the free OnDemand movies offered by Comcast; i.e. My Best Friend is a Vampire and Teen Wolf Too*). On the whole though, I've found myself eagerly scanning the Netflix Friends Queues to see what they recommend and I've been pleased with the results. Until last night, when I was suddenly freaked out by this thought:
The last three movies in a row were all Paul Giamatti films.
How could this be? I don't even particularly like Mr. Giamatti- I found Sideways to be dismally depressing (although pretty in it's concept), and c'mon now, he was in Big Momma's House. 'Nuff said.
And yet the fates aligned to bring me three of his films in a line-up: The Illusionist (pirated-style), The Lady in the Water (Netflix), and Cinderella Man (Encore OnDemand). So what gives? Is it that I'm destined to someday meet Mr. Giamatti and be forced to discuss his films at length? Will he see me from a distance, quietly cataloging books, silhouetted in the library windows at dawn as the pink skies crest overhead, and fall madly in love with me? Because seriously, if this is just coincidence it's a little much, even for me.
I'm checking my Netflix queue right now to make sure he's not in any of the movies to come...
Because there's no way I'm marrying that dude, he's way too strange.
Oh, and don't forget:
*Yes, that's how they spell it. Horrid, I know, but I didn't make it up. Oh, and in case you were wondering:
The Illusionist: enjoyable
Lady in the Water: interestingly boring
Cinderella Man: meh- wasn't in the mood for it

I used to keep about 50 movies in my queue at one time. They would arrive, and I couldn't for the life of me remember why I added them to the queue in the first place. Then, I realized that in a fit of all things Gyllenhaal, I had added all of Jake and Maggie's movies at once about 3 months prior. That was a bit silly, because there is no legitimate reason to rent "Bubble Boy."
It's amazing how often the me of current day detests the taste of me last season.

didn't he throw a tantrum when he wasn't nominated for Sideways? You can't marry a fella like that, too many issues...

netflix brought me "troop beverly hills" yesterday... and yes, i was so in the mood for it!

N: hee! Too funny. Glad you mentioned Bubble Boy, now I know not to add it to the queue.
M: I don't recall, but it seems likely. I think I'd actually be scared to meet him in real life, he seems kind of loony.
K: I LOVE Troop Beverly Hills. When she has all the uniforms sewed up to be cute? Awesome!

I might be afraid of Paul Giamatti too - if only because I'm sure I'd spit out some stupid line from Sideways. But I love the idea that he would find you cataloging books.
Also, I'm the only person so far who hasn't liked Children of Men. Somehow "important" films irritate me. I do love working with someone who gets the screeners so I can scoff at movies in the privacy of my own home.
Don't even ASK about Fight Club.

I do need to go see Children of Men. That there is an entire film on that topic amazes me, doubly so since it's been getting rave reviews.

Oh, don't forget Big Fat Liar. Which I own but only because I have a slight (legal! He's over 18 now) crush on what-his-name. You know. That kid on Malcom in the Middle...Agent Cody Banks. Okay, I think this officially means the crush is over if I can't remember his name.
And yes, I kind of enjoyed Big Fat Liar but I am weird and willing to admit it.

i just remembered that my latest netflix actor has been woody harrlson (unintentional, of course)... larry flint, natural born killers (awful!), prairie home companion, welcome to sarajavo and a few others i seem to have forgotten.
