Dotcom
I did a very grown up thing today, in a decidedly un-NPW way. That is, I decided to be proactive for once and actually buy the domain name nancypearlwannabe dot com before it got scooped out from under me. I mean, that name's gotta be a hot commodity, right? It was really quite the score. So, thanks to go daddy, I am now the proud owner of my very own url. And the best part? It doesn't have the vaguely icky word blogspot in it.
The worst part? I'm not much of a web designer. So here's your fair warning: it's going to be a work in progress. Although Blogger has always been quite easy to use (despite it's many, many flaws), I'm thinking of using Word Press as the backbone. That is, unless someone out there has a better idea or has very strong anti-Word Press feelings to share with me. As for the actual layout of the site, I want something that's minimalist and elegant, yet fun. I'm hoping to coerce C into helping me. He'll probably do it for some cookies.
And with that exciting news, I'd better jet. The stupid substitute is in again today and just dropped in to ask me for some lined paper; apparently one of his students chewed all his yesterday.
Yeah. I didn't ask.

i'd be more than happy to address any of your html/css questions/issues... and i don't even required [the ability to properly digest...] cookies.

OOOOH, I'm quite jealous. I've been meaning to buy my domain name for the longest time to get rid of my pesky blogspot. My friend who said he was going to help me keeps being busy when I need him.

It's my hero NANCY! She lives on my desk at work.
Also: I can't program my way out of a paper bag, even after taking an entire class in web design.

I bet at some point you're going to find out that Stupid Substitute is really just an escapee from the nutbar house.
Congrats on the domain name!

K- Why, thanks muchly! I now have to choose some type of web hosting service. I thought Word Press would give me one free; apparently, I'm dumb.
N- I thought I'd be much more excited to know I owned a website. It's less... thrilling... than I thought.
W- I have two Nancy dolls! One in the package, one standing up in my dining room cabinet.
Lucky- Funny, there is an asylum right down the street.

Congrats on the purchase! I'm desperate to have a sleek, sexy blog minus the help of (frustrating!) blogger so I'll be interested in hearing how your adventure works out.

woo hoo! congrats NPW. once you set yours up, i think i want to do mine too! :)

OOOH wow, that's awesome!
I keep meaning to get "alyndabear" but I can't justify paying for it, because I am cheap like that. =X

Dude, I use Wordpress on Funky Carter and I love it insanely. Put another way, it's a happy-time-fun-show. Congrats on your domain name purchase! Doesn't it feel awesome?

Kelli- I played around with it a bit yesterday and so far, nothing doing. This will take more work than I planned. It will be my winter project.
chai- Hooray for new sites! Everyone will follow me into domain name ownership.
Aly- At least yours says "typepad" and not "blogspot". Typepad sounds respectable.
Ace- Thanks for the tip- I downloaded WordPress 2.1 yesterday. Now I just have to pay somebody to host the site, which I'm strangely hesitant to do... who hosts yours?

I can't speak to the problems with blogspot or blogger (because I don't use them). Rather, some other observations.
First, your blog doesn't have to be on the same site as your domain. My blog is at http://cahwyguy.livejournal.com, and is just pointed to by cahighways.org. If I wanted to, I could even embed it within cahighways.org; I believe LiveJournal provides paid users with a way to do that.
Second, look at the capabilities of your blogging tool. One of the reasons I stay with LiveJournal is that they provide the ability for me to have various access levels for my posts: public, friends only, custom friends lists. I wouldn't get that if I was running my own blogging software (and I haven't seen blogger do that -- each blog seems to be a world unto itself).
So think about what you want to do with the site. Doing the coding is easy. It is getting the concept right that's the hard part.
11:17 AM
I should also note that you can take advantage of 3rd level domains, so my blog is also accessible, via URL redirect, at http://blog.cahighways.org/
(or it will be as soon as the enom change propagates :-))

C- Thanks for the advice. I'm only a semi-techie person, but I'm sure that info will come in handy later on, when I actually decide to do something with the NPW site. :)

Shelley, I use this company -- www.drak.net -- for my hosting. My plan is only ten bucks a month. Apparently the site is run by a bunch of, I don't know, witches or something. It was recommended to me by Ben years ago; I later found out he's a secret pagan or whatever.
What was I talking about? Oh right: So the good thing about drak (and you can probably find this with other hosting companies), is they offer Fantastico as part of the hosting options, which allows you to just set up Wordpress on your web space automatically with one click -- no fuss, no muss. If you ever do decide to go the Wordpress route, let me know, and I'll tell you all about K2, which is the best WP theme mod there is.

$10 a month! That's a rip off! I don't want to pay that much. Stupid free blogspot.

Wow! That's so exciting that you bought your own url!
God save us from subs....
