Miles From My Home

This afternoon I'm taking a little solo car trip to the much-heralded upstate New York area. Does anyone have any suggestions about must-sees in the Rochester area? Anything fun/interesting/crazy would be great; I'm going to once again attempt to quell my love for New England long enough to see what the non-Manhattan part of NY has to offer.

Try not to cry too much. I'll be back on Monday, I promise.

Dammit, I wish you had asked this sooner, because I have a list of interesting things to do in Rochester (complete with map) from a friend who's from there, from a trip I took out there a couple of years ago, but said list is at home.

There's a cool bar where local bands play called the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. Find it, and you'll be a neighborhood with other cool/interesting places. There is also an English pub nearby there whose name escapes me that has goo, authentic hearty stewy things and other such English specialties.

And check out the Eastman House, if you have time. Nothing earth-shattering, but an interesting look at the man who put cameras in all our hands.

Pittsford, small town just outside, is cute. Kids were skating on the frozen Erie Canal when I was there. So quaint.

And you must, must, must go to the flagship Wegmans, further out on Monroe (3915 Monroe, specifically). You will never approach groceries the same way again.

If I find the list and there's anything else noteworthy on it, I'll post it, but the likelihood of this is slim (I'm leaving town myself right after work).

And take 90 (where it diverges from the Thruway) through Albany. You'll save a buck or two in tolls, travel a slightly shorter distance, and you'll see the imposing imperial architecture of the capital.

Has good authentic hearty things, that is. Not goo. They may have goo, but that's not what I was referring to.

Thanks, Pete! Rochester was definitely an experience worth having. I'm sure I'll be back... Bug Jar, here I come!
